On Counting Magapie’s.

leave a comment »

Of late I noticed a lot of these birds about, I don’t particularly like them as they attack all the small birds nest’s and kill their young.
But one is reminded of the popular rhyme.

One for Sorrow,

Two for Joy,

Three to get married,

Four to Die,

Five for Silver,

Six for Gold,

Seven for a secret that’s never been told.

Dell to let go 1900 employee’s.

with one comment

It has finally been announced that Dell is to shed 1,900 of its staff in Limerick, its a move that has been long expected but none the less doesn’t soften the blow for the people concerned. Layoffs are to start in April from what I gather and are to be completed by January 2010. The effect on suppliers and subcontractors of Dell and their likely additional layoffs is not yet quantified. Its a very worrying time for everyone┬áinvolved. I wouldn’t fancy having to try and sell a house in Limerick at the moment. ┬áNow that the “s**t has hit the fan” , what does one do next ? Is it out of bounds to suggest a Workers co-op ? Dell is after all just a badge. Would the IDA/Shannon Development back it ? It is difficult to see anything else coming on the horizon at least for a year or two. Generally the “cost aspect ” of Ireland has to be looked at, in the last five or six years the cost of doing anything in this country is sky high and just about every business feels it. I do believe that it is time to put the price tags back on all goods in the shops too.

2009 International Year of Astronomy.

leave a comment »

Well it is four hundred years since Galileo invented the first telescope and to celbrate this, they (U.N) are declaring 2009 as the “International Year of Astronomy” . They are planning alot of events throughout the year, starting off with a stand at the BT Young Scientist exhibition at the RDS Dublin 7th to 10th of january. As far as I know it is admission free to the Astronomy presentation, so if you are in Dublin next Wednesday to Saturday it might be worth your while going ! All this astronomy stuff always fascinates me and reminds how insignificant man/people are in relation to the vastness of the Universe.
